American Security Council Responds to State of the Union Address

February 1, 2006

WASHINGTON – The President addressed the nation last night with his annual State of the Union Address. He reiterated the point that America is engaged in a long-term fight against the enemies of freedom.

“We love our freedom, and we will fight to keep it,” he said.

“The President immediately addressed the importance of defeating terrorism and all those who harm the United States,” said Matt Williams, executive director of the American Security Council. “He addressed the many issues we are concerned with and resisted withdrawing troops from Iraq. He addressed the people of Iran, telling them America respected them and their country but that Iran is ‘now held hostage by a small clerical elite that is isolating and repressing its people.’’

“These are all important points,” said Williams. “If I could make one addition, it would be to have addressed the threats and dangers of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. The growing tensions between him and the United States are only raising my concerns of long-term threats to our security.”
