“Patriot Act” – Proven Security for America: ASC Praises Passage in Senate; Condemns Attempted Filibuster

Posted on Mar 6 2006

Washington, DC – The Senate voted Wednesday 89-10 in support of renewal of the USA Patriot Act, marking a huge success for President Bush, whose policies in the war on terror have been largely defined by the Act.

While a December filibuster required the Administration to agree to some new limits of power, it will retain a vital function in preventing acts of terror in the United States.

“The American Security Council commends the Senate for continuing this critical security measure and has supported the Patriot Act since its enactment,” said Executive Director Matt Williams. “After fear over whether or not the bill would be renewed, I am delighted to see this landslide vote in the Senate, which lends support to American efforts in this war and ensures that it remains a top governmental priority.”

“Thankfully Senator Feingold’s filibuster was largely ineffective, said Williams. “It is no coincidence that we have not seen a terror attack on American soil since 9/11, and the Patriot Act is the most effective tool available to prevent and thwart possible terror attacks.”
